It is estimated that Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria, the most famous and powerful drug trafficker in history, paid the grower 800 dollars for a kilo of raw coca. Refining cost 2,200 dollars per kg, but it was transportation that represented the most expensive item, amounting to about 4,000 dollars per kilo. The total costs, therefore, were approximately 6,800 dollars for each kilo of cocaine.
Once it reached its destination, usually the city of Miami, the coca was sold to intermediaries for about 22,000 dollars per kg. Considering that each flight in Escobar's fleet could carry about 400 kg of product and that the average was around a dozen trips per day, the math shows that before going to sleep, good old Pablo was pocketing, net of costs, more than 70 million dollars — all in cash
