Samson is blinded by the Philistine soldiers

The painting freezes the dramatic moment in which the Hebrew leader Samson, a giant now deprived of the strength contained in his hair that Delilah has just cut, is about to be blinded by the Philistine soldiers (the people that gave their name to Palestine).

The Bible recounts that Samson, just awakened, thought he would be able once again to free himself as he had done other times. He did not know that the Lord had abandoned him. The Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes. Then they took him to Gaza and bound him with a double bronze chain. In prison they forced him to turn the millstone for grinding grain, but meanwhile his hair, which had been cut, began to grow back.

As the final words make clear, the story does not end there. The Hebrew prisoner is brought, as a triumph, to the feast of the Philistine leaders, and there Samson groped for two central pillars that supported the building. He braced himself against them, with his right and with his left, shouting "let Samson die with all the Philistines", and then pushed with all his strength. The building collapsed, crushing the Philistine leaders and all the others.

Thus Samson killed more people with his death than during his entire life. His brothers and his relatives came to take his body. They carried him away and buried him in the tomb of his father Manoah, in a place between Zorah and Eshtaol. Samson had been judge, leader of Israel, for twenty years.
