Early life surrounded by nature

William Wordsworth was born in 1770 in Cockermouth, in the Lake District, an area of supreme natural beauty. As a child he was allowed to wander freely in the countryside, and its sights, sounds and smells provided the inspiration for his later poetry. St John's College, Cambridge, he graduated in 1791.

The friendship with Coleridge. In 1797 he met the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The friendship between Wordsworth and Coleridge was crucial to the development of Romantic poetry. The result of this remarkable friendship was a collection of poems called Lyrical Ballads, which first appeared in 1798.

The beginning of Romantic poetry. Lyrical Ballads was written jointly by Wordsworth and Coleridge in 1798. The two poets agreed to divede the task of composing the volume: Wordsworth contributed poems on common events written in ordinary language, while Coleridge those of exotic or fantastic nature. Lirical Ballads marked the appearance of modern poetry, the subjective poetry of the self.
