In 1924, at the age of 27, he approached Nazism: at that time, Hitler was in prison following the failed Munich Putsch and had already written Mein Kampf. Goebbels initially joined the anti-capitalist, self-proclaimed socialist wing, which criticized the concentration of party power in the hands of Hitler and his leadership group.
During the party's national congress in August 1927, Goebbels clarified that he "had no intention whatsoever of organizing propaganda based on content and arguments. The only thing he aimed for was popular approval."
By that point, he already possessed all the talents that Hitler would recognize until the end. In addition to his gifted oratory—vocal and postural—he had a ruthless capacity for incitement and provocation, obsessive organizational skills, and a sinister inclination to incite "terroristic and brutal action against all forms of power."
Soon, he moved from the völkisch components to the purely Hitlerian dominant faction, attracting the leader's attention for his communication and organizational abilities. As expected from his education and dedication to communication, he was obsessed with propaganda, public demonstrations, and recruiting new members. He quickly understood that "what fuels a movement based on ideology has nothing to do with reason, but with faith," referring to Jesus: "He did not provide proof, he formulated a thesis." From the beginning, he knew that Nazi propaganda cared not about content but about suggestion: "Berlin needs sensations like fish need water." He wrote:
Good propaganda is that which achieves results, because its purpose is not to please but to achieve a certain goal. Therefore, saying that propaganda is too coarse, petty, brutal, or dishonest is meaningless, because none of that matters. Propaganda is always a means to an end. One is born a propagandist, and what else was Jesus Christ?
Did he not engage in propaganda? Did he write books or preach?

In 1927, he founded his ideal newspaper, Der Angriff ("The Assault"), which immediately captured attention in a stagnant Berlin. As Berlin was the capital of politics and journalism, Goebbels took full advantage, winning an unexpected Reichstag election.
With cold calculation, Goebbels devoted himself to manipulating every piece of news: he channeled his energy into the daily, minute-by-minute organization of media to turn news into influence, and thus into power. Most importantly, working alongside Hitler became a life mission: a strong political vocation and unparalleled sense of redemption, capable of erasing youthful disappointments and illnesses:
In his eyes, the Führer became the brightest star in the global political firmament, an unattainable genius. The small and deformed Goebbels dedicated all his clear intelligence and total amorality, without scruples, to his service. Equipped with exceptional oratory skills and incredible control over his own emotions, he immediately established contact with the public, leveraging the extraordinary qualities of his voice. In this way, he became one of the most powerful and feared men in Germany.
