What prevented me from doing so were the messages I had absorbed about girls and young women who did. The most popular programs on Ghanaian television all followed the same script. A promiscuous girl gets pregnant, has to leave school to raise her child, and ends up with her life ruined. I had seen that situation happen in real life as well. One of the girls at my college had become pregnant and left school to have her baby but, contrary to the stories told in the television programs I used to watch, she returned to school a few months later. Plot twist: once she returned, the gossip and the fingers pointed at her drove her to leave school again. I often wonder what direction her life took.
